“ I studied abroad 2 years ago in Leeds, and growing up eating and cooking Asian food, I needed to be able to get my ingredients somewhere... This shop is at the end of the main strip nestled in a little Chinatown of its own. They had most of the main ingredients I needed (the produce was ok, but not fantastically fresh--that's sadly what I expect from Chinese markets though). It wasn't the cheapest, but it is one of the few places to get your pickled turnip, dried pulled pork, big bags of Jasmine rice, etc... Anything else I needed I got from a stall in the Kirkgate Market. ”
“ I completely agree with the other reviews, this place is great! I've come in here searching for some fairly obscure stuff and they pretty much always have it. Craving durian or mangosteen? They've got it. Looking for spam musubi supplies? They'll even show you to the furikake. On occasion, I've even found cilantro (not to be confused with coriander) in their fresh produce section. The best part is, everything has a pretty decent price, the staff is helpful, and they try to organize the store by national or food type "themes" so even if you're not sure about something you can easily wander over to a section to check! The only thing that I haven't been able to find there yet is gobo, or pickled burdock root (if anyone knows where to find this in Leeds, please let me know!) ”
“ Had never tried asian food before and since going there have been addicted. The food they sell is great and affordable, if you're curious about trying new food then this is one place to go. ”
“ I love this little supermarket, however they never have the things i want in stock! I just wish i new what more of the foods were and how to cook with them. Normally i buy all my thai food here and the red thai curry paste (for cheat cooking) is brilliant, so are the japanese little dumplings. ”
“ A trip to town for me isn't complete without a trip to this place. A big draw for me is the awesomely cheap selection of every type of noodle under the sun, but it has so much more than that. If you're looking for some kind of slightly obscure ingredient, everything you need for an asian feast, and cheap storecupboard staples in bulk, this is the place. Every time I go in there I spend ages just wandering around, inspired by all the amazing ingredients to make sushi, or a full chinese meal from scratch. I never do, but I'm still inspired... ”
“ This place is a magic wonderland of exciting cuisine. I challenge you to find a more interesting and inspiring shopping trip - you simply won't find it. As you enter the store the decor is a fascination, with beautiful lanterns hanging overhead and a beautiful silver water globe feature in the entrance. Immediately as you go in on the left there is the fruit and veg section which offers up more exotic fruit and veg than I have ever actually seen. They had enoki mushrooms, star fruit, dragon fruit, bamboo and so much more. They had fruit that I don't even know what it is. The only description I can offer is that they reminded me of Stinky from the Moomins, only more pinkish brown than black! I'm totally going back to try them some day. As well as that they had EVERYTHING to do with traditional chinese, korean and other asian cuisines. With more noodles than you can imagine, cakes, fish, 'mochi' and so much more it is probably the most exciting place to shop for food in Leeds. I can only hope that at some point I will get to live near enough to make it my regular supermarket! My boyfriend and I have made a pact that we will go in there and put together a meal sometime and I'm going to hold him to it! A delight to shop in, but pop in just to see. ”
“ Wow...this place drew me in with the sheer mass of foods and brightly coloured packages available. I visited here the other week when I went to the theatre and was seriously impressed by the amount of foods available to buy. You have to go look around to see what i mean but there are masses upon masses of great things in here. The staff are that lovely that they speak to you about recipes you could try and offer helpful hints and tips. I'll definitely be going back to investigate further when I'm not rushing to the theatre! ”
“ Wing Lee Hong provides authentic Chinese food in a more western than traditional format to suit Chinese residence and Chinese food lovers, and cooks in Leeds. Wing Lee Hong's stocks fresh oriental foods, traditional bottled drinks, frozen main courses and dried fruits amongst other sweet and savoury oriental foods and drinks! When walking around it become evident to Chinese takeaway lovers that the food they receive on a Saturday night from a man on a motorbike isn't really very representative of traditional oriental cuisine. The food in Wing Lee Hong supermarket all looks so fresh and healthy. On posters in the store and on foodd packaging their is huge emphasis on well being and healthy diet! If like me you have an interest in keeping up a healthy body Wing Hong's supermarket maybe a better way to detox than shopping at ASDA. Although I am not a massive fan of cooking Chinese (maybe cause I really wouldn't know where to start!), however I do pop in to get my fresh veg and some green tea if I pass past that way, It is always a lot cheaper than Morrison's and definitely a lot less hectic! If you are a lover of authentic oriental cuisine I would recommend popping in because you are bound to find some tasty treats in here. ”
“ The longest established Chinese supermarket in Leeds, this is the place to come for those more unusual ingredients that crop up in recipe book. Many is the time I've come in here, shopping list in hand, pointing enthusiastically at some unpronounceable word, and each time the shop assistants smile patiently and point me towards the offending, odd-looking item. They stock a huge range of unusual fruit and vegetables here, as well as more recognisable ingredients like coriander and beansprouts at a far higher quality than what's available in most British supermarkets. The off license section is exciting too, with such delights as Ginseng Beer and Chinese Lychee Wine alongside more common favourites like Japanese Sake. I can't say you'll always enjoy what you find here - I still shudder when I think of the sticky, eyeball-like rice ball sweets - but it will always be an adventure and much more fun than a trip to Morrison's. ”
“ Not just a Chinese shop but a full supermarket. Masses of Chinese delicacies as well as other Oriantel foods. The frozen section is so crammed with delicious dumplings, buns, seafood etc., as well as more curious foods like chicken feet, ducks tongues etc. There is a fresh produce section which is miles cheaper than British supermarkets, plus zillions of noodles, various different soya sauces and pretty much everything you need for that special Chinese meal. ”
